A visit to Portsmouth was necessary for us to understand how the British Empire was such a worldwide power in early centuries. The harbor houses a few authentic ships that traveled the seas many years ago. One of these ships was the HMS (Her Majesty’s Ship) Victory. This ship won the English the Battle of Trafalgar against the French and the Spanish in 1700’s. We took a tour of the ship’s interior from an old Royal Navy Sailor. The entire time I thought of the movie, Pirates of the Caribbean. This ship was exactly like the ones in the film. I now understand why women were not allowed on the ship- the living condition of these men were awful.
